Review Zoom’s system requirements and ensure your system meets these recommendations. For musical content, applied lessons, or other situations where preserving audio quality is important, you can change Zoom’s audio settings to minimize automatic adjustments such as gain, extended frequency response, and echo cancellation.

While turning off automatic adjustments can preserve the natural sounds of music, singing, or spoken word, it also requires meeting participants to position their microphones and speakers properly, and to manually adjust their microphone levels.

Good conferencing etiquette is also important with these settings; participants should use headphones when possible and mute their microphones when not speaking or playing. These are advanced features; the instructions below assume you have basic knowledge of Zoom and your computer’s audio and video settings. Remember that each participant will need to adjust their settings to transmit natural sound. Be prepared to advise other participants on how to adjust their audio settings and speaker and microphone placement for best results.

Quick Fixes When Your Zoom Meeting Camera Isn’t Working.

 

If the computer is temporarily stalling, it may resolve itself and anything you do in the meantime may make the situation worse. Failing that: Try to leave the meeting and rejoin.

Before doing so, make sure all applications that you are not using are closed. If the application has frozen: try to close it as normal, then reopen and rejoin.

Make sure you have no external displays or monitors plugged into your laptop, or secondary displays plugged into your computer. Make sure you have no applications open they may be using or controlling your webcam ie. Facetime, skype, etc Make sure you have given Zoom permission to access your camera: On Mac: instructions here. On Windows: instructions here. Restart your machine. If this is still not working, try an alternative device eg. Make sure there are no Bluetooth devices connected to your computer.

Cases have been known to obstruct microphones on certain laptops: remove any cases, stickers or accessories that could be potentially obstruct your microphone. Make sure you have no applications open that may be using or controlling your webcam if in doubt, close all applications that you are not using!

Can you hear any other applications? If not, you may be on mute or the volume may be low, check your volume settings. On the web specifically, you can also check this setting by restarting your call and making sure you press Allow when prompted about the camera and mic access. In the same way, you can also search for Microphone and choose Microphone Privacy Settings to do the same. From there, scroll down to let desktop apps access your camera , and make sure that the toggle switch is On.

Open System Preferences and select Security and Privacy. After that, click the lock icon and enter your password to make changes. You can then click Camera from the sidebar and make sure your desired web browser and Zoom are checked. Note: Some laptops also have a physical webcam switch that must be enabled to allow the webcam to function properly. Double-check that yours is in the right position if you have one.

If all else fails, uninstall the software. The next time you try to join or start a virtual meeting, the web browser client should download the software for you. You also can manually install the software from Zoom. Another common problem with Zoom is an audio echo during a meeting. If you hear an audio echo or feedback, there are three possible reasons why. Someone could have both computer and telephone audio active at the same time.

In this case, ask them to either hang up on the telephone call or exit the PC-based audio during the conference by clicking the up arrow icon next to the microphone icon and choosing Leave Computer Audio. Computer or telephone speakers might be too close to each other. Ask the two people that are too close to each other to move apart or shut a door.

You could also ask one of them to leave the audio conference or mute audio on their device; though muting by itself may not always be as effective in reducing the echo. Using headphones helps reduce the echoing effect, too.

Lagging and freezing usually indicate a problem with your internet connection. On a mobile device, move to an area with a better connection to see if this helps. On PCs, stick with a wired Ethernet connection, if possible. Aim for the right internet speeds for a successful video chat.

During a meeting, select the up arrow next to the Microphone icon and make sure the desired mic is chosen. If other people can hear you, but you can’t hear them, make sure the right speaker is chosen under Select a Speaker. Ask the meeting organizer to unmute you. If you think the person hosting the meeting muted you, send them a message in chat and ask to be unmuted. Check your device settings. Go to the device’s settings to see if your mic is enabled. Make sure you properly set up your mic in Windows and select the audio input you want on Mac.

Close other programs that use your mic. Make sure other software isn’t competing for access to your microphone. Check your app permissions. Go into your device’s app settings and ensure Zoom has permission to access your microphone. Update your device’s drivers.

If you’re using Windows, go into the Device Manager to ensure your mic’s drivers are up-to-date. Reboot your device. The reason why rebooting resolves computer problems is that it closes any processes that might be interfering with hardware or software. Mute other nearby audio devices. If you hear an echo, your microphone might be picking up the audio from another source, like a TV or speaker. To avoid hearing an echo in Zoom, everyone should mute their mic when not speaking.
